1:59 pm in News, Veterinary Schools by Jonathan (Vetstart Editor)

Autumn launch for first veterinary nursing Masters course

The UK’s first clinical Masters course in veterinary nursing will be launched this autumn at Harper Adams University College – and prospective students are invited to apply now.

The Masters course has been designed for veterinary nurses in full or part-time work, whether in teaching or in practice. It will be delivered via a blend of day visits to Harper Adams – with seminars, guest speakers and practical workshops where relevant – and supported distance learning.

Dr Martin, course manager, adds: “The clinical element of the course is designed to deliver enhanced Veterinary Nursing skills, such as rehabilitation nursing, oncology, pain management, client support, behaviour problem management, which would be an asset to any companion animal veterinary practice.”

BSAVA 2012

3:38 pm in News by Jonathan (Vetstart Editor)

Vetstart at BSAVA 2012

The congress saw a number of announcements including the news that Mark Johnston is to be the next BSAVA president.

One Health was an issue of particular importance. We attended the press conference chaired by Michael J Day (One Health chairman) with input from SAVSNET (Small Animal Veterinary Surveillance Network) head Alan Radford.

Vets need to make the first move to engage the human medical community, and human doctors need to be aware of the importance pets have on their patients. Antibiotic overuse, rabies in deprived countries and obesity still play a major part in both human and animal health. More details will follow on One Health which will hopefully get more attention throughout the year.

Amongst other things, we saw Hills staff on segways, mini golf at Petplan and people dressed in full orange suits for the Vet Charity Challenge.

Vet nurse students’ charity skydive

10:06 am in News by Jonathan (Vetstart Editor)

Three VN students prepare to skydive to raise funds for Breakthrough Breast Cancer

Leah Harrop, Emma Page and Caroline Bromley hope to raise £1500 for cancer charity Breakthrough Breast Cancer with a skydive at Whitchurch Airfield.

Emma, 20, commented:
“We feel that it will be an amazing experience that we will remember for the rest of our lives, and doing it for such a good cause makes it even more worthwhile.”

The students took part in a sponsored walk for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People but this is their first major fundraiser – and what a fundraiser to start off with. This is an amazing idea and we at Vetsforum wish them the best.

Donate to the skydive at JustGiving.
