What risks does a practice run when hiring a new grad?
New graduates can bring a lot to a practice. Curiosity, drive for the profession and a good attitude can go a long way in improving a practice. New graduates can even empower more experienced vets and give them perspective.
But there are risks too: new graduates may be inexperienced or nervous, there are training costs and there’s no absolute guarantee the graduate will fit in.

Client/vet relationships and social skills are more important than technical knowledge when joining a practice.
That’s the opinion of recent graduates from 3 vet schools across the UK in a study conducted by BMC Medical Education. Problem solving, decision making, recognition of limitations and the ability to cope with pressure were all rated as important or very important.

New vets have a tough time ahead of them. There is the drive to find a job and stick to it no matter what, but sometimes it simply doesn’t work out.
Sometimes finding a new job after what can often be quite a traumatic experience can be hard. Simply finding the motivation to continue can prove hard, especially for vets where you’ve gone through so much training and teaching already.

The International Institute of Health Services (IIHS) has conducted a study on the desirability of biotechnology research and found promising results. The study includes veterinary science and agricultural management, and was conducted internationally.
A lot of vets graduate and immediately go into practice, but that’s not the only path out there. Vets are needed in research roles across the world.
