Vets and pediatric medicine

3:16 pm in Jobs, News by Jonathan (Vetstart Editor)

How similar is being a vet to being a pediatric doctor?

It sounds ridiculous, but working with pets and small children can often be quite a similar experience. Knowing how to deal with patients that can’t speak or react, and dealing with their carers, can place vets and pediatricians in similar positions.

The Learning Vet has an interesting piece examining where the two professions differ.

With the SAS and other animals: A vet’s experiences during the Dhofar War 1974 – Book Review

4:49 pm in Jobs, News by Jonathan (Vetstart Editor)

We received a promotional copy of With the SAS and Other Animals which Glen Cousquer BSc (Hons), BVM&S, CertZooMed, MRCVS kindly reviewed for us

“With the SAS and other animals” provides a fascinating account of a young, Royal Army Veterinary Corps officer’s, six-month tour of duty in the Sultanate of Oman. The significance of this, somewhat unusual, attachment emerges through the author’s biographical account of his contribution to the Dhofar War. The account is colourful, vivid and entertaining, bringing to life the many challenges of this fine example of a “Hearts and Minds” operation.

Andrew Higgin’s account of his experiences as the last of the British Army Training Team’s vets in Dhofar is fascinating on a number of levels. Firstly, it will be of interest to veterinary professionals who have worked and travelled in the developing world. It will be particularly inspiring to young vets in their first year or two of practice, who are wondering where their new qualification, skills and training can take them.

Do corporations influence vet students?

12:09 pm in Jobs, News by Jonathan (Vetstart Editor)

Tough courses, debt and corporate pressure?

The veterinary profession is very much represented by the corporations that operate within it. Brands and logos are commonplace in practices and congresses, but to what extent do they influence students and the decisions they make?

Eric Barchas DVM has written a fascinating piece on Dogster on when corporate involvement compromises veterinary integrity.
